Newton-john Turned To Anti-depressants To Cope With Boyfriend's Disappearance

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN turned to anti-depressants to help her cope after the disappearance of long-time boyfriend PATRICK MCDERMOTT last year (05). MCDermott went missing during a fishing trip in California in July 2005 under mysterious circumstances. Eyewitnesses claim to have seen MCDermott in Mexico, while other rumours say he staged his disappearance to escape large debts. The GREASE star rubbishes the reports and insists MCDermott would never have faked his death because of the pain it would cause his family and loved ones. She tells American publication People, "I've been through cancer and divorce. Nothing compares to this." The singer realised she couldn't get through the ordeal without help and decided to take anti-depressants to help her deal with the pain. She adds, "I took antidepressants for six months. I had to." Newton-John insists that the healing only really began when she stopped taking the medication adding, "Once you go off them you can deal with it better. "It's important to go deeply into your emotions. You have to cry."

When I was younger, through my teens & early 20's there were no medications approved to treat depression. As I recall those medications weren't even 'discovered' yet. It was absolutely hell to have to go through those years feeling the way I did. I began taking anti-depressants as they came out on the market. It wasn't until my late 20's that a psychiatrist gave me the correct dosage of Zoloft. I am grateful every day of my life that depression is no longer a part of my days. I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I have since I was 5 years of age due to a couple of tragic & traumatic events. So for someone like you, Olivia to take a brave step towards healing I commend you. Most people don't always agree with this form of treatment for depression, so they never give it a chance. Most of the time it takes the medication along with psychotherapy to work through the issue at hand. That is what you appear to have done Olivia so please don't ever feel ashamed or weak for doing this. To anyone out there in this dilema just remember that just because you may need a little help by using medication it does not mean that it is a lifelong problem. For those of us who will need it for life just be happy to have found a chemical solution, I am. Once again Olivia thank you for the inspiration you give to us all.
