New York Fashion Week Kicks Off In Style, Obviously

New York Fashion week; a who's who in style, a smorgasbord of celebs, icons and socialites, and above all, a showcase for the biggest talents in fashion, kicked off yesterday, but design royalty pulls focus today (September 6, 2012).

The big hitters are set to be Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg and Ralph Lauren, leaving little room at the table for other promising talents. The trio are so big; they're set to grab all the attention, tabloid space and photo opportunities available. After her performance at the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony, where she reunited with The Spice Girls, Victoria Beckham is set to build on her growing reputation in fashion. Her designs have garnered praise by everyone from Anna Wintour (who sat next to David Beckham at the last show) to Elle MACpherson. The ex-Spice Girl's designs have quickly become a regular fixture on her New York runways, despite only showing for the first time in 2008.

The Olympic link doesn't stop there; many have been suggesting that the summer games have influenced a more relaxed, sporty style to the creations exhibited this year. "The Olympics were probably on many designers' minds when they were designing these collections ... so we will see sporty jackets and track pants and some athletic inspirations," said Colleen Sherin, senior fashion director Saks Fifth Avenue according to Reuters. The designs won't quite be the spandex and sweat absorbing, performance enhancing, surgically designed sportswear donned by professional athletes, rather delicate and expensive silks designed to mimic the attire of those competing. "It's hard to deny that everyone has been paying attention to the Olympics. We've been looking at these fit and healthy individuals and all these interesting sporty silhouettes," said Ken Downing, fashion director of Neiman Marcus.
