For so long in the shadow of the San Diego Comic Convention, the rise of New York's own event is indicative of the huge resurgence that comics have had over the previous few years thanks to big budget Hollywood film adaptations, to the point where there is now easily enough space on the calendar for the two events to co-exist. Never has that been more evident than over the past four days of the 2012 New York Comic Con, which has seen some 115,000 attendees flock to the Jacob K Javits Convention Center.

Variety Magazine took in the event, and commented on the disparity of the crowds attitudes at San Diego and New York. The publication pointed out that, whereas the more established San Diego comic con - which takes place earlier in the year - has a crowd somewhat jaded and demanding, the freshness of the New York gathering - now in its sixth year - is far more positive and accepting.

The real head-turners were Archaia Comics, Lego, Sony PlayStation, Square Enix, Nintendo, Marvel and DC, all of whom had the largest booths at the event. Films were in general quieter, ironic given the recent exposure the movie industry has given comics, but Legendary Entertainment did pitch up, as did Fox. Given the successful reaction to the New York event this year, though, it will be interesting to see how long San Diego can hold on to its top dog status.
