New Dvr Automatically Skips Commercials

11 May 2012
In the past, television networks and advertisers have often shrugged off discussion about how DVR users are fast-forwarding through commercials by rationalizing that at least those viewers get a glimpse of the commercials and are not taking a bathroom break, or texting, or checking their email instead; they have to be sitting in front of their TV sets actively using a remote. But that may soon change. On Thursday, Dish subscribers were offered a new DVR called the Hopper, which automatically jumps past commercials. The viewer doesn't have to pick up the remote except to click an on-screen button (Auto Hop) before they begin watching a show. "You can put down your remote control and not see an ad again for the entire show," Vivek Khemka, vice president of Dish product management, told today's (Friday) Wall Street Journal . The DVR is made by EchoStar, which spun off DISH as a separate company in 2008. (The chairman of both companies is Charlie Ergen.) The device is almost certain to anger TV networks, cable providers, and advertisers -- and probably lead to lawsuits. But DISH CEO Joe Clayton told the Journal "What's wrong with giving the consumer what he wants? That's my response to anybody who takes issue with this."

Why don’t CBS, FOX, and NBC execs want consumers to enjoy commercial-free TV? It’s what we want! I’m a customer and employee of Dish, and I think Auto Hop is great because you can easily watch commercial-free TV. A well known consumer advocacy group, Public Knowledge, agrees that people should have the right to control how they watch TV. They’re taking a stand for consumers by creating a petition that tells CBS, FOX, and NBC media to keep their hands out of your living room and DVR. Joe Clayton brings up a great point; what’s wrong with making the customer happy? I only work a few hours a week for Dish, but in the time that I’ve spent there recently, I’ve learned enough about the Hopper to get one myself. The PrimeTime Anytime feature records primetime of the four major networks so that I can watch them all, and I never have to pick which shows I’ll watch based off if there are no other conflicting shows I want to watch. I thought that was a step towards making me, the customer, happy, but now Clayton has taken it a step further with Auto Hop. It’s a step in the right direction, and that’s giving me the choice to watch TV for the shows, and not all the interruptions.
