Netflix To Air The Artist First -- Via Streaming
Oscar best-picture frontrunner The Artist will be available via Netflix's streaming service before it makes its debut on any premium cable service. In a joint statement, Netflix and The Weinstein Co. said that they had agreed on a multi-year licensing deal that will put TWC movies on Netflix exclusively within one year of their theatrical release. Those films will include Undefeated, nominated for an Oscar for best documentary feature; W.E. , the Madonna-directed drama; Shakespeare's Coriolanus , directed by and starring Ralph Fiennes; and the critically acclaimed French films, Sarah's Key and The Intouchables. Netflix, which has been strongly criticized by some analysts for spending profligately to acquire content for its streaming service, did not disclose terms of its deal with the Weinsteins. But Harvey Weinstein said in a statement that the deal represented "a fantastic coup," adding "It's exciting that we can offer consumers a supremely convenient way to see the kinds of movies that made us want to be in this business in the first place."
