Nelson Buys 100-Year-old Church

WILLIE NELSON has taken his love of gospel to the max - by buying a church. The country legend surprised the congregation at the Methodist church in his hometown of Abbott, Texas on Sunday (02JUL06) when he performed gospel songs and announced his plans to preserve the 107-year-old building. Nelson was joined by his sister BOBBIE and pal LEON RUSSELL. The church closed its doors in May (06) after the congregation merged with another United Methodist Church nearby. But Nelson was determined to bring church-goers back to the old building, explaining during Sunday's service that he and his sister had been regulars since they were kids. He told the congregation, "Now, you're all members of the Abbott Methodist Church, and you will be, forever and ever." Nelson's new church comes days after the country great launched his own satellite radio station, WILLIE'S PLACE. He also owns a biodiesel company, called BioWillie.

SuperMensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon 4289630 Film Reviews

For his lively film directing debut, Mike Myers (aka Austin Powers) traces the remarkable life of his friend, the almost too-likeable music manager Shep Gordon. A mensch is a really nice guy, and this film documents how Gordon has created a makeshift family of loyal friends around him, even though he's never had a proper family of his own. It's an engaging movie that reminds audiences that the most important thing in life is certainly not fame.

Shep Gordon came to Los Angeles as a young man and happened to stay in the same hotel where Joplin, Hendrix and Morrison were hanging out. Quickly getting involved in their blurry world of drugs and money, Shep won over everyone he met simply because of his integrity and generosity. As a manager, he lived the high-life with high-powered girlfriends like Sharon Stone (who introduced him to Buddhism) and a Playboy Playmate wife. He helped Groucho Marx sort out his finances, and worked with lifelong pal Alice Cooper to create Cooper's iconic on-stage persona. And he's still considered one of the best fix-it men in the business. His home in Maui is a bolt-hole for any of his celebrity buddies who are trying to escape the limelight.

The film is assembled with a snappy rhythm that catches a sense of Shep's fast-paced lifestyle. It's packed with great film clips, hilarious home movies and even a few re-enactments. But the best stories are told by the starry interviewees who clearly adore Shep and recount riotous backstage anecdotes about their experiences with him, as well as his larger-than-life personality and unstoppable libido. The most jaw-dropping story is about how he ramped up clean-cut Canadian singer Anne Murray's reputation and career by having her photographed with super-cool lothario Teddy Pendergrass. But with a life this high-flying, Shep has never found a life partner or had his own children. Although he has become a father figure to his ex-wife's kids, essentially raising them himself.

Yes, there's a lot to Shep's story, and Myers playfully litters the film with big names and infamous events while quietly noting that Shep himself doesn't quite realise that he has built up a massive family around him over the decades. By taking on the business thugs who controlled the music business, he changed the industry forever, helping musicians earn more of their own profits. And he did the same thing for chefs, propelling the likes of Emeril Lagasse to global fame. Through all of this, Shep emerges as an unusually thoughtful man who has become a success simply because he never abandoned his friends. Which is something everyone should aspire to.

Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon 4261297 Videos 27th June 2014

Shep Gordon may not be as famous as some of the biggest celebrities in the world, but you can bet they count him among their closest friends. A popular Jewish music manager who took on the career after meeting Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, Shep's first subject was shock rocker Alice Cooper in 1965. Since then, his Hollywood career has exploded having also worked alongside the likes of Pink Floyd, Luther Vandross, Blondie, Ann Murray and others. Not only that, but Shep instigated the breakthrough of celebrity chefs and also become close personal friends with the 14th Dalai Lama during his venture into Buddhism. Now, though, after a life of luxury and living other people's lives, this 'mensch' as his star friends call him (a Yiddish word essentially meaning 'a good person') is looking for a life of his own.

'Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon' is an entertaining documentary based on the life and career of one of the world's most ingenius talent managers. It serves as the directorial debut of comic actor Mike Myers (star of 'Austin Powers' and 'Wayne's World') alongsde his Emmy winning directing partner Beth Aala ('Pool Party'). The movie is scheduled for UK release on July 18th 2014.

“Honestly, I was surprised to be getting this degree,” Nelson said on his bus before the ceremony. “I don’t know what else is out there. I never thought about anything beyond second-degree black belt.”

He added: “I’m pretty healthy at 81. I think a lot of it has to do with the exercise that you do. I think martial arts is one of the best exercises you can do. Mentally, spiritually, physically, everything. I’m sure that’s helped.”

It’s been a sterling birthday for Nelson, who turned 81 today. Although he has previously claimed it was April 29, which would make him 81 and a day. To be honest we’re a little surprised he doesn’t 100% remember. Normally if an 81-year-old forgot his birthday, you could understand, but Nelson isn’t your average 81-year-old

Recent Oscar winner, Matthew McConaughey, inducted Nelson into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame at a concert last weekend, marking a extraordinary month for the Texan, who has spoken at length about his love for martial arts before when interviewed by The Telegraph.

"I have always been interested in keeping fit and doing boxing and wrestling. As a youngster, I loved Charles Atlas, Bruce Lee and Kung Fu. But when I lived in Nashville I switched to doing Taekwondo,” explained Nelson in December 2012.

“Last year, at the age of 78, I got my second degree black belt. And singing is the best exercise – two hours a day will keep you in pretty good shape. I think it's very important to learn from your own body. It doesn't lie to you. If it feels good, do it. If it don't feel good, don't do it."

Willie Nelson's Stolen Armadillo and 5 Other Famous Victims of Theft 4139674 News

Willie Nelson suffered a fright this week when his stuffed Armadillo, Ol’Dillo was stolen after a Las Vegas concert. Whilst Willie was pretty lucky, some other celebrities have been less fortunate when it comes to retrieving their stolen goods and they’ve ended up loosing much more than a stuffed armadillo.

Miley CyrusMiley Cyrus was robbed just prior to her 21st birthday

Miley Cyrus

Just days before Miley’s 21st birthday in November last year, the singer was robbed of over $100,000 of jewellery and accessories from her Los Angeles home. Police investigating the incident saw no evidence of a break in and the theft was believed to be an inside job. The incident happened in broad daylight but luckily Miley was not home at the time. The robbery wasn't the first time the Bangerz hit maker has been targeted by thieves. In September 2012 an intruder armed with a pair of scissors attempted to force his way into the singers home but fortunately Miley’s staff were quick to alert police and the intruder was arrested.

Bling Ring

Perhaps the most famous incident of celeb related crime involves the group who became known as ‘The Bling Ring’. From October 2008 through to August 2009, this group of teens targeted the homes of Hollywood’s rich and famous including Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom and Paris Hilton. Hilton was thought to be targeted by the group on a least five separate occasions, on one of which they were said to have entered her home after finding a key under the door mat. The seven ‘bling ring’ members were individually arrested in connection with the different thefts and five of the group served jail time. The events were later depicted in Sofia Coppola’s movie The Bling Ring starring Emma Watson.

Despite the publicity Fey’s laptop and jokes remain unfound.

There were no passengers inside the car when it was found and the whole incident remians a bit of a mystery.

When Bieber arrived in New Zealand he was mobbed by teenaged fans and in the ensuing chaos, two girls ran off with his purple baseball hat. The girls then held the hat for ransom asking Bieber for a hug each and a photo in return for the hat. Soon the would be thieves gave in and return the hat to Justin, no hugs required, but they did leave a note saying sorry along with their phone numbers. Justin later said on twitter, “I got my hat back. No hugs, no thanks u’s. Just glad they did the right thing. I don’t condone thievery!! Haha.”

Willie Nelson's Stuffed Armadillo, Ol'Dillo, Returned After Kidnapping 4137848 News

Willie Nelson's stuffed armadillo has been returned after it was taken from a concert in Las Vegas.

Willie Nelson's stuffed armadillo disappeared from a concert in Las Vegas.

The 80-year-old country singer allegedly has the stuffed armadillo as a mascot when he tours. Affectionately named Ol'Dillo, the mascot was seemingly stolen by one of the crowd whilst Nelson was performing at the Westin Lake Vegas resort in Henderson, Las Vegas. It seems a member of the audience, whilst Nelson was greeting fans on Monday night (31st March), took the opportunity to steal the armoured mammal.

Nelson's crew were allegedly frantic when it was revealed their taxidermied companion was missing and called the hotel requesting officials look at CCTV footage from the show in order to find the culprit.

Willie Nelson
Was the return of the armadillo on April Fools' Day merely a strange coincidence?

However, the kidnapper's conscience evidently got the better of him and an embarrassed and apologetic man returned Ol'Dillo on Tuesday (1st April) morning. Fox News spoke to the resort's marketing director who explained the man drove up to the hotel and, after handing over a box containing the armadillo, apologised and requested Ol'Dillo be returned to his rightful owner.

No one knows where the armadillo ended up on his adventure but, following his stressful kidnapping, the Westin Lake Vegas resort were obliged to ensure Ol'Dillo enjoyed the rest of his stay. He was even treated to some time at the spa as the Westin tweeted after announcing his safe return. After enjoying his short break, Ol'Dillo is currently on his way back to California to be reunited with Nelson. Hopefully, Ol'Dillo will be back with Nelson by tomorrow evening as he is due to appear in San Diego as part of his latest tour.

Vera Lynn And More Of The Oldest Music Makers 4118135 News

At 97, Vera Lynn is set to become the oldest artist to release an album, when her new work ‘Vera Lynn: National Treasure - the Ultimate Collection’, is released. While Vera might be the oldest artist still making albums she’s not the only one to prove that advancing years is no reason to stop making music. Take these five for example.

Dame Vera LynnDame Vera Lynn

Doris Day

In 2011 Doris Day began the oldest artist ever to have a UK top 10 album of new material. The then 87 year old’s album ‘My Heart’ entered the UK chart in the number 9 spot, earning her the accolade. The album also became Doris’s first Billboard chart entry in 47 years. Doris is of course probably best remembered for her acting work, which earned her an Oscar nomination in 1959 for ‘Pillow Talk’. So far in her career she’s released 31 albums and been awarded a Grammy lifetime achievement award.

Tony Bennett

In 2006, a then 79 year old Tony Bennett collaborated with many of his favourite fellow musicians, including Bono, Sting and Michael Bublé for his album ‘Duets’, earning him the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Then in 2011 he became the oldest living artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard chart with the follow up ‘Duets II’. This time he collaborated with contemporary artists such as Carrie Underwood and John Mayer. The album also included Amy Winehouse’s final recording, ‘Body and Soul’. Now the singer is 87 and there’s no signs of retirement, his next release is a collaboration album with Lady Gaga no less entitled, ‘Cheek to Cheek’.

Loretta Lynn

When 72 year old country legend Loretta Lynn wanted to make a comeback album, she called on Jack White to lend a hand. The result was the highly acclaimed ‘Van Lear Rose’ which won her Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 2004 and introduced her sound to a whole new generation. Now at 81 Lynn is still very much going strong and rumour is that she’s set to record a follow up to ‘Van Lear Rose’ working with Jack White once again.

Another country star who shows no signs of stopping is 80 year old Willie Nelson. So far in his career he’s released a mammoth 68 studio albums, wow. His most recent was October’s ‘To all the Girls’, a collection of duets with famous female country singers, which featured Carrie Underwood and Norah Jones. The album entered Billboard's Top Country Albums chart at number two, making it Nelson’s highest charting album since 1989.

Guitar icon Les Paul made history in 2005 when he became the oldest artist ever to debut on billboard's top 200. Paul’s Les Paul & Friends album entered the US chart at number 152 a few months after he celebrated his 90th birthday! The album was also his first new recording since his 1978 Grammy-winning collaboration with Chet Atkins, ‘’Chester & Lester.’ Paul passed away four years later in 2009 after suffering complications from pneumonia, he is one of the few artists to have a stand-alone exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Les Paul

Guitar icon Les Paul made history in 2005 when he became the oldest artist ever to debut on billboard's top 200. Paul’s Les Paul & Friends album entered the US chart at number 152 a few months after he celebrated his 90th birthday! The album was also his first new recording since his 1978 Grammy-winning collaboration with Chet Atkins, ‘’Chester & Lester.’ Paul passed away four years later in 2009 after suffering complications from pneumonia, he is one of the few artists to have a stand-alone exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Ray Price, one of the best loved country singers of all time, has died aged 87 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. The singer entered hospice care on Thursday, leaving a message for fans that read, "I am at peace. I love Jesus. I'm going to be just fine. Don't worry about me. I'll see you again one day."

The country radio veteran Bill Mack - who has been acting as a spokesman for the family - confirmed on Facebook that Price has died. "Ray Price left for heaven at 4:43 PM Central Time," he wrote, "He went in perfect peace."

Price's musical careers spans 65 years and he is often considered one of the most versatile performers in country music history - his output ranging from honky-tonk to western swing.

Born in Texas in 1926, Price enlisted in the Marines where he stayed for two years. He began performing on local radio and moved to Nashville after signing a contract with Columbia Records. His first five releases failed to fly, but his 1952 track Talk To Your Heart climbed to No.3 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs.

One year later, he formed the band the Cherokee Cowboys which at one point would feature Willie Nelson and Price developed his signature sound, the 4/4 shuffle.

His biggest hits would include City Lights, Crazy Arms and Heartaches By The Number - the latter of which is often considered one of the best country songs of its generation.

Willy Nelson To Publish "Unvarnished, Complete, and Tremendous" Autobiography In 2015 3929172 News

US singer songwriter Willie Nelson has snapped up a book deal that will allow him to get his autobiography published, reports USA Today. Published by Little, Brown in 2015, the memoir will apparently be and "unvarnished, complete, and tremendous" account of the country star's life.

The 80 year-old musician is a safe bet for the publishing house: he has already written several books, including his 1988 autobiography Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die: Musings From The Road but it seems that Nelson's personal story needs an update.

The new book promises to be more personal than his other books, sharing untold stories that involve Ray Charles, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, the publisher has stated. However, Nelson's life is fascinating on its own: the actor and musical performer was born in Texas during the Great Depression.

The son of a mechanic father, his mother left when he was young leaving Willie and his sister to be raised by their grandparents. Influenced by artists including Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and Django Reinhardt, Willie earned money by singing from as young as 13. After stints working for television and radio stations in the fifties, Nelson cut his first record in 1956 and although it was not successful, he persevered with his music career and eventually signed a record deal in 1961.
