Nbc: The Struggle Returns

NFL football again scored first place in the ratings last week -- but NBC didn't have it. The Green Bay Packers/San Francisco 49ers NFC playoff was carried by Fox, and it attracted 30.89 million viewers. NBC also didn't have The Voice to prop up its ratings, either. In fact, aside from its coverage of the Golden Globes Awards, which placed fourth on the Nielsen list, it was unable to place a single show in the top 20 ratings of total adults. (Its highest-rated regular show was the new Chicago Fire drama, which came in at No. 23.) Without the awards-show telecast, it would have descended to last place again. As it was, it eked out a third-place finish behind CBS and Fox, after performing strongly through the first half of the season. CBS, on the other hand, increased its strength as the No. 1 network, attracting nearly twice the number of viewers, on average, as any of its competitors. Its long-running drama NCIS took second place with 21.11 million viewers, while the comedy The Big Bang Theory ranked No. 3 with 20 million viewers. All three evening newscasts posted solid numbers. NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams remained the leader with an average of 9.31 million viewers. ABC World News with Diane Sawyer was second with 8.49 million, followed by The CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley with 7.14 million viewers.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:
1. NFC Playoff: Green Bay at San Francisco, Fox, 16.9 rating/27 share; 2. NCIS, CBS, 13.1/20; 3. The Big Bang Theory, CBS, 12.0/19; 4. Golden Globe Awards, NBC, 11.8/18; 5. NCIS: Los Angeles, CBS, 11.2/17; 6. Person of Interest, CBS, 9.6/15; 7. 60 Minutes, CBS, 8.9/13; 8. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 8.8/14; 9. Elementary, CBS, 7.3/12; 10. Modern Family, ABC, 7.1/11; 10. Vegas, CBS, 7.1/12.
