Nbc's Smash Crashes In Season Debut

CBS executives, who had continued to sing the praises of its lets-put-on-a-show series Smash, even while no one else was doing so, were No Doubt chagrined and chastened when they checked the overnight ratings for the season premiere. The two-hour opener drew just 4.47 million viewers. While the first hour attracted 5.21 million, only 3.96 million stayed tuned for the second hour. Last year's series debut, by contrast, drew 11.44 million, but the audience progressively eroded over the length of the season. Meanwhile, CBS's NCIS continued to bag more than 20 million viewers. Tuesday's edition counted 21.49 million. NCIS: Los Angeles, which followed, counted 16.57 million.
