Nbc Scores Biggest Ratings Win In Years

The beginning of the football season dominated the Nielsen ratings chart for last week, with NFL-related programs on NBC accounting for six of the top ten programs. With NBC's America's Got Talent accounting for two more, the struggling network wound up with a whopping 80 percent of the top ten, something it has not accomplished since The Days of Must See TV. It was enough to give the network an easy victory over its rivals, helped also by its coverage of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday -- the night of President Obama's acceptance speech -- which wound up at No. 12. Still, one had to search down the list to No. 37 to find an NBC scripted show on the Nielsen list ( Grimm ). The only two other shows that cracked the top ten were -- at No. 5 -- CBS's 60 Minutes report which devoted the entire hour to an interview with the Navy Seal who has written a book about the shooting of Osama Bin Laden, and, at No. 9, a repeat of CBS's NCIS . Among the evening newscasts, the race was especially tight. As usual, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams led with 7.69 million viewers, while ABC World News with Diane Sawyer came in second with 7.41 million. The CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley placed third with 5.58 million viewers. For the week overall, NBC was in first place with an average 6.4 household rating and a 10 share. Fox was second with a 3.5/6, edging out CBS with a 3.4/5. ABC trailed with a 2.8/4.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research 1. Sunday Night Football, NBC, 16.5/26; 2. NFL Wednesday Special, NBC, 14.7/23; 3. Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kickoff, NBC, 11.8/19; 4. Wednesday Night NFL Pre-Kickoff, NBC, 11.6/19; 5. 60 Minutes , CBS, 8.0/13; 6. Football Night In America Pt. 3, NBC, 7.7/13; 7. NFL Season Opening Kickoff Show, NBC, 6.9/12; 8. America's Got Talent (Tuesday), NBC, 5.4/8; 9. NCIS, CBS, 5.3/8; 10. America's Got Talent (Thursday), NBC, 4.9/8.
