Nbc Claims Top Five Ratings Spots

NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympic Games accounted for only three nights of the Nielsen weekly ratings for last week, and they grabbed the top three rankings. Next week, No Doubt, they'll take over the top seven. Friday's telecast of the opening ceremony attracted 40.65 million viewers. By contrast, the top non-Olympics show of the week, the Tuesday edition of America's Got Talent , drew 10.43 million. Between the Olympics and AGT , NBC boasted the top five shows of the week -- a heady result for the network that usually winds up in the ratings cellar. Unfortunately, its next-highest-rated show, The CLIOS World's Best Commercials, came in at No. 27. CBS reruns filled out the rest of the top-ten list. NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams , which focused on the Olympics, also saw its ratings rise, as it averaged 8.53 million for the week. That widened the distance between itself and ABC World News with Diane Sawyer , which drew 7.25 million viewers. Surprisingly, the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley , reported a significant audience rise to 5.99 million viewers. It is a measure of the strength of CBS overall that, despite NBC's big success with the Olympics and AGT , it remained the most-watched network of the week, posting a 6.6 household rating and an 11 share. ABC was in second place with a 5.0/8, edging out Fox with a 4.8/8. NBC remained in last place with a 4.5/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research 1. Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony (Friday), NBC, 21.0/37; 2. Summer Olympics (Sunday), NBC, 19.8/33; 3. Summer Olympics (Saturday), NBC, 15.8/29; 4. America's Got Talent (Tuesday), NBC, 6.3/11; 5. America's Got Talent (Wednesday), NBC, 5.4/9; 6. The Big Bang Theory, CBS, 5.1/9; 7. NCIS, CBS, 4.8/8; 8. Two and a Half Men (Thursday), CBS, 4.2/7; 9. NCIS Los Angeles, CBS, 4.1/7; 10. 60 Minutes, CBS, 4.0/7; 10. Csi Crime Scene Investigation , CBS, 4.0/7.
