Naveen Andrews - Naveen Andrews Feels 'Empathy' For Royals After Shooting Diana Biopic
Actor Naveen Andrews has developed a "real empathy" for Britain's royal family after playing Diana, Princess Of Wales' lover in a new biopic.
The former Lost star admits he knew very little about the royals before signing up to play surgeon Hasnat Khan in upcoming drama Diana, about the final two years of the late princess' life.
However, Andrews now feels compassion for the tragic princess after shooting the film with actress Naomi Watts in the title role.
He tells Britain's The Sun, "At the end of the day, Diana and Dr. Khan were both real people. One of them was an iconic figure but the script is respectful to both. I was never interested in the Royal Family before but after reading the script I had a real empathy with Diana for the first time...
"She was an icon but also an ordinary human being who was fiercely lonely and wanted a relationship with this very private man... I knew nothing about their affair before I was approached for the part. But he was a warm, decent, honourable person who was important to Diana. Princes William and Harry even met him when they were very small and Diana's relationship with him is illuminating - it shows her in a new light."
Khan refused to be involved in the production, but Andrews is convinced Diana would approve of the movie.
He adds, "Dr. Khan wants nothing to do with the film. He was never interested in the publicity, that's why nobody knows about him... No one from the Royal Family has commented on the film or said they are against it so I have no idea what they think... (But) whatever critics of the film might have to say about it, I don't think Diana would be unhappy with what we have done."
