Movie Reviews: The Big Wedding
How could there not be something nice to say about a movie that stars Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams, right? Well, critics haven't been able to come up with anything. There's not a single positive review about The Big Wedding by any of the nation's leading movie critics. Washington Post critic Stephanie Merry observes: Sadly, superior talent can propel a movie only so far. Bad scripts beget bad movies, even when four Academy Award winners are involved. Several critics suggest that the movie must have been contrived as a raunchy comedy for older moviegoers. But Stephen Holden in the New York Times remarks that to say the movie takes the low road doesn't begin to do justice to the sheer awfulness of this star-stuffed, potty-mouthed fiasco. How awful is it? Well, Lou Lumenick in the New York Post refers to a line in the film spoken by Robert De Niro: I'd rather gouge my eyes out with hot spoons! Writes Lumenick: I'm not sure exactly what he was talking about, but I'd like to think it referred to the prospect of being forced to watch The Big Wedding.''
