Movie Reviews Tower Heist

Director Brett Ratner's Tower Heist is nabbing some impressive reviews, with many critics praising both the script and the performances by Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller. Several critics do remark that the script defies any kind of logical thinking but that audiences will be willing to suspend logic and go with the flow. All director Ratner is "interested in is providing entertainment," comments Peter Howell in the Toronto Star. "He leaves us smiling, if not believing our own eyes." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times remarks similarly "This movie would fall to pieces if it didn't hurtle headlong through its absurdist plot without ever pausing for explanations." His objections to the plot, he explains, amount to quibbles. "The movie is broad and clumsy, and the dialogue cannot be described as witty, but a kind of grandeur creeps into the screenplay." On the other hand, Kyle Smith in the New York Post calls the movie "cunningly engineered," and explains "Normally, caper movies fall apart as they go along, but this one gets stronger and stronger on the way to a perfect ending, laying out each step of the robbery while mixing in many reversals of fortune and fresh, inventive stunts." Will it revive Murphy's faltering career? Hard to say, some critics suggest, given the fact that the best lines in the movie go to Stiller. But New York Daily News critic Elizabeth Weitzman argues that Murphy's "fast-talking grifter doesn't just steal scenes; he walks off with the entire movie" And Chicago Tribune critic Michael Phillips, noting that Murphy is one of the producers of the movie, says that given his funny delivery of even some pedestrian dialog, "no doubt producer Murphy will arrange for co-star Murphy to have more to do in Tower Heist 2.
