Movie Reviews The Wolfman

The Wolfman has been, er, dogged by reports of production problems, director changes, numerous reshoots and release postponements -- leading many to suspect that it would be mauled by critics. Such is not entirely the case. "There's a lot to appreciate in the shaggy, imperfect but still fun new version of The Wolfman, " writes Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News. Similarly, Chris Vognar writes in the Dallas Morning News "If this isn't a masterpiece, it's hardly a disaster," and notes that in the earlier part of the movie director Joe Johnston "achieves a vivid combination of gloom, pathos and excitement, even if it never goes too far beneath the surface." Says Ty Burr in the Boston Globe "The movie is by no means good but it's surprisingly enjoyable." And Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune concludes "I think Johnston has saved it; he may have his weaknesses (so many scudding-clouds transitions!), but he shapes the attack sequences with a sure sense of pacing. The film is extremely bloody. I'm not sure who it's for, exactly It may be too somber for the teenagers and too splattery for others. Then again, I went for it." Nevertheless, many other critics are showing their fangs when it comes to the movie. "This Wolfman is a howler but not in a good way," comments Bruce Demara in the Toronto Star . And Lisa Kennedy in the Denver Post pronounces it "an oddly anemic outing."
