Movie Reviews The Social Network

Reviews don't come much friendlier than those for David Fincher's The Social Network , written by The West Wing 's Aaron Sorkin and starring Jesse Eisenberg has Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times awards it four stars, writing, "David Fincher's film has the rare quality of being not only as smart as its brilliant hero, but in the same way. It is cocksure, impatient, cold, exciting and instinctively perceptive. ... A great film ... splendidly well-made." Manohla Dargis in the New York Times celebrates the film this way in the conclusion of her review "Mr. Fincher and Mr. Sorkin offer up a creation story for the digital age and something of a morality tale, one driven by desire, marked by triumph, tainted by betrayal and inspired by the new gospel the geek shall inherit the earth." Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times calls it "a barn-burner of a tale that unfolds at a splendid clip." And Michael Phillips concludes in the Chicago Tribune "An unlikely marriage of directorial and writerly sensibilities has produced one of the most stimulating films of the year." A few critics voice some mild reservations. "I just wish The Social Network wasn't (sic) quite so glib," Chris Vognar comments in the Dallas Morning News . "Sorkin's onslaught of perfectly timed, perfectly conceived verbal thrusts and parries can be lulling, if never boring." And Ty Burr in the Boston Globe laments the fact that the movie lacks "a strong female presence."
