Movie Reviews Tangled

It may have the look of an old-fashioned Disney hand-drawn feature, but critics say that it is obvious that the talented folks at Pixar animation are firmly in control of Tangled , Disney's 50th animated feature. It is, says A.O. Scott in the New York Times , "like entering a familiar old neighborhood that has been tastefully and thoroughly renovated." Moreover, he writes, it has a script that evinces "a willingness to marry complex psychology with storybook simplicity." Joe Neumaier in the New York Daily News observes that it "could have become just a retread of the studio's past princess tales, but this genuinely charming, chintz-free story does something new It takes the time to chill out, as its heroine might say." Jennie Punter in the Toronto Globe and Mail is equally enchanted with the movie, calling it "a splendid tribute to the best moments from decades past but also a thrilling example of what could be the future of animated family entertainment from the studio. They really pulled out all the stops on this one." Several critics reserve most of their fault-finding for the songs written by Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater, comparing them unfavorably with those that Menken and the late Howard Ashman wrote for such films as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. Roger Moore in the Orlando Sentinel writes that they're "pleasant enough, if instantly forgettable." And Wesley Morris in the Boston Globe writes that "there's a droop to these numbers. The movie doesn't need them."
