Movie Reviews Hit & Run

Ordinarily studio execs, meticulous students of demographics all, target women with romantic comedies and men with car-chase thrillers. With Hit & Run , which opens today (Wednesday), they're aiming to capture them all with a rom-com/car-chase flick. And critics aren't sure whether the ingredients have effectively been blended. It makes for "a strange, but strangely entertaining combo," comments Betsy Sharkey in the Los Angeles Times . Ricardo Baca in the Denver Post remarks that "the cutesy interplay" between stars Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard is often "intensely enjoyable." However, he adds, "When Hit & Run turns into an action film, it loses some of that charm." No biggie, Associated Press film critic David Germain suggests, noting that "the movie's stunts and chases are nothing much, but the lack of resources steers the story away from action and toward the characters, who are wry, irreverent, even endearing." And Claudia Puig in USA Today writes, "Even in the midst of cars racing, it's funny and endearing." But Stephen Holden of the New York Times is one of several critics who suggest that the movie has the feeling of having originated among friends "in the wee hours between bong hits and shots of tequila." It reminds Holden of "the lesser comedies by Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack." And Rafer Guzmán in Newsday remarks that the actors are "all clearly having fun, though that's not the same as making a movie." He concludes that the movie "is a pleasant, forgettable diversion, though its cast and crew probably took home the best memories."
