Move Over Bieber! One Direction Dominate Mtv Video Music Awards

One Direction continued their recent dominance of the pop music genre by picking up three gongs at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday (September 6, 2012). The boy band - Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson - won Best New Artist, Most Share-Worth Video, and the prestigious Best Pop Video (beating Bieber in the process).

One Direction's VMA 2012 turned out to be a sensational night for the gang, with front-man Styles saying it had been "unbelievable", adding, "This was our favourite performance we've ever done. For us to be here in the first place is amazing, and to perform and win a Moonman is amazing". Speaking from the stage, Irish born Niall Horan added, "We've grown up watching this show and to even be here is an honour". One Direction's VMA performance also went down a storm in the Staples Center: the boys performing their hit 'One Thing' to rapturous applause. Rihanna's VMA performance got the show off to a rollicking start, with the Barbadian singer launching into a remix of her single 'Cockiness' with ASAP Rocky and Calvin Harris. Later in the evening, she took the Video of the Year prize for her hit 'We Found Love'.

However, it turned out to be One Direction's night, who can now proudly boast of properly cracking America. They sold 176,000 copies of their album in the U.S in the space of a week, topping the digital charts within minutes of its release.
