Most-pirated Movies Are Also Box-office Hits

The most-pirated movies of all time are also some of the biggest box-office winners, according to TorrentFreak.com, which tracks BitTorrent use on the Internet. According to the website, Avatar , with 21 million downloads, is the most pirated movie ever, with The Dark Knight and 2007's Transformers tied for second place with about 19 million. Avatar , it noted, is also the top grossing movie of all time with $2.782 billion in ticket sales, while The Dark Knight is third with $1.001 billion. Also making the top ten list was Inception , which came in at No. 4 with 18 million downloads and The Hangover , No. 5 on the list with 17 million. 2009's Star Trek reboot came in at No. 6 with 16 million downloads, followed by Kick-Ass with 15 million. The Departed, The Incredible Hulk and Pirates Of The Caribbean At World's End all tied for eighth place with 14 million downloads.
