Moore Defends Medical Cheque
The Oscar winner's latest documentary, Sicko, is an expose on the U.S. healthcare system and inspired Moore to help cover hospital expenses for an anti-Moore website operator.
His funding covered the health insurance premiums for the wife of Jim Kenefick, owner of MooreWatch.com. Kenefick issued a plea last year (06) on his website warning readers it could be shut down because of the rising cost of his wife's bills.
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday (19May07) Moore insisted he had the best intentions when he posted the money.
He said, "Before I sent him (Kenefick) the cheque, I asked myself, 'Would you write the cheque if it wasn't going to be in the film?'
"I wanted to answer honestly, and after I thought about it, I realised that it was something I would do and should do."
Kenefick later posted on his website that, after the Cannes press screening, Moore left a voicemail message notifying Kenefick he was the anonymous donor.
Moore's message was "normal and gracious," Kenefick wrote.
