Megan Young was crowned Miss Universe this Saturday, amid controversy in Indonesia
Congratulations to Miss Phillipines, Megan Young, who won the Miss World pageant this Saturday. This Miss World event was moved from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta to Bali, because of protests by Muslim fundamentalists, the BBC reports. Bali is a resort destination with a primarily Hindu population. The pageant was held under increased security, but thankfully, there were no disturbances on the night of the event.
US-born Young beat out 126 other contestants and, upon receiving her crown, pledged to be “the best Miss World ever.” Ms Young, who moved to the Philippines at the age of 10, broke into tears as the Miss World sash was put over her shoulder by 2012 winner Miss China. She pledged to "be myself in everything I do, to share what I know and to educate people".

Miss France, Marine Lorphelin and Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, came in second and third place, respectively.
Earlier this year, the organizers of Miss World ran into some trouble with holding the pageant in Indonesia. The country is the world’s most popular Muslim state and the organizers had originally offered to cancel the pageant’s bikini round in response to complaints about pornography and immorality. The hardline group Islamic Defender Front had planned to cross the island on Saturday and protest Miss World, however they were not able to complete their plan, due to the East Java port being shut late on Friday.
