The comic actress, writer, producer and director, Mindy Kaling has a new show: The Mindy Project, and it kicks off tonight on Fox, reports The Boston Globe.

Kaling plays an obstretrician/gynaecologist who is addicted to romantic comedies. The setting for the show was St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston: “I grew up there,” she says of the hospital. “I was basically living there, and I actually know what it was like the way my mom saw it, so it was kind of an interesting experience.” The news that her show had been picked up came alongside the tragic news that her mother had died, adding a sentimental and pertinent caveat to the hospitalized setting. “Between the pilot and writing my book, it was all basically when she was diagnosed last year around this time,” she explained. “I did so much writing for both. And then I got to spend a lot of time with her and run little bits of dialogue by her, so she’s very much a part of the process of both my book and this new show.”

Kaling was nominated for an Emmy in 2010 for her writing on The Office, and her book, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns),” became a New York Times bestseller. She also boasts well over a million twitter followers, which of course isn’t a writing award or a top-selling book, but nowadays…that’s a thing.
