Mourning Mike Stoller has paid tribute to his songwriting partner Jerry Leiber, insisting there was "nobody better" at penning hit tracks.
Leiber, who partnered Stoller in writing some of the 20th century's most beloved tunes - including Elvis Presley hits Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock and King Creole - died on Monday (22Aug11) after suffering cardiopulmonary failure.
Stoller has now spoken out to pay tribute to his close friend, insisting he was one of the greatest songwriters in history.
Stoller says, "He was my friend, my buddy, my writing partner for 61 years. He had a way with words. There was nobody better."
In a post on Twitter.com, fellow songwriter Carole King - who worked with Leiber in the 1960s - writes, "Farewell, Jerry Leiber: a legend, a friend."
Hurts' Theo Hutchcraft quotes a lyric from classic Leiber and Stoller song Stand By Me, writing: "Rip Jerry Leiber. 'The night has come & the land is dark'".
And Rock and Roll Hall of Fame president Terry Stewart adds, "The music world has lost one of its greatest poet laureates."
