Folk singer Michelle Shocked stunned fans in San Fransisco when she launched into a homophobic tirade during a live performance on Sunday (17Mar13) - and encouraged the crowd to discourage same-sex marriage.
The once-politically correct Anchorage hitmaker reportedly ranted that gay marriage would be "the downfall of civilisation" and told the audience to promote Proposition 8, the voter initiative that outlawed gay marriage in California. Her comments prompted many fans to walk out of San Francisco venue Yoshi's.
She is quoted as saying, "When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilisation, and Jesus will come back. You are going to leave here and tell people, 'Michelle Shocked said God hates f**gots.'"
The born-again Christian went on to deliver several Bible verses in English and Spanish, which prompted the club's manager to cut short the gig, according to The Bay Area Reporter.
Bosses at the venue took to Twitter.com to express their shock over the singer's rant, writing, "We at Yoshi’s Sf do not & will not ever tolerate the type of bigotry & hatred exhibited last night by @MShocked. She will never be back."
Derek Hunter, Yoshi’s artistic director, added, "This was Michelle Shock's (sic) third visit to Yoshi's San Francisco; her first was March 2009. She has never given any indication that she is anti-gay or racist in her previous plays. She obviously has some serious issues and unfortunately chose our venue to vent them."
As a result of the fall-out from Sunday's show, bosses at a venue in nearby Novato, the Hopmonk Tavern, scrapped the singer/songwriter's scheduled 29 March (13) concert.
