Michael Winner - Michael Winner's Debut Film Set For First Public Screening

Michael Winner's debut film is set to be aired in public for the first time following the moviemaker's death in January (13).

The director made The Square on $3,200 (£2,000) he borrowed from his father after he left England's prestigious University of Cambridge aged 21, but it failed to secure a release and has remained hidden for more than 50 years.

However, editors at Britain's Daily Mail report it is now set to be shown for the first time after bosses at the British Film Institute (Bfi) were given the master tapes of all of Winner's movies.

Winner's wife Geraldine, who appeared in The Square, says, "When he made the film, the distributors wanted to take Michael's name off the credits. It was the sort of thing that happened then. There was a row and he took the film back.

"But after that it was never shown. It was terribly disappointing. I was just 16 at the time when he cast me in the film. I can even remember my one line of dialogue. I had to walk across a dancefloor and say to an old man: 'Do you want to dance, pop?'"
