Michael Fassbender - Michael Fassbender Continues Ascent With Venice Best Actor Award

Fast-rising star Michael Fassbender has won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Venice Film Festival, to add yet another milestone in a rapidly ascending career.

The Press Association reports that Fassbender won the accolade for his role in the Steve Mcqueen-directed drama 'Shame,' where he plays a sex addict struggling to control his impulsions when his younger sister moves in with him. MCQueen and Fassbender had also worked on the 2008 film 'Hunger' about the Irish hunger strikes of 1981; that too led to film festival success, winning the much coveted Camera d'Or Award for first-time film makers at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.

The 34 year-old actor once played a bit part character in the much lauded series 'Band Of Brothers,' but his first real break into public recognition came with the role of Stelios in 2006's '300.' With a slew of jobs following his Cannes success, Fassbender has also been notable for performances in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglorious Basterds' and ANDREA ARNOLD's 'Fish Tank.'

This latest success, was roundly praised by critics, with The Metro reporting Channel 4's controller of film and drama TESSA ROSS remarking of his and ROBBIE RYAN'S Best Cinematography award - for another British film, 'Wuthering Heights' - "It is absolutely wonderful to see Michael and Robbie's talent recognised in this way - both have pushed their craft to the limits of excellence to produce work of truly outstanding quality."

The festival's main award - The Golden Lion Award for the Best Film - went to Russian movie 'Faust.'
