Michael Douglas - Michael Douglas: Candelabra reviews uplifting

Michael Douglas is thrilled with the positive reaction to his portrayal of flamboyant pianist Liberace in 'Behind the Candelabra'.

The actor admits he has had a tough few years after being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2010 - and supporting his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones during her on-going battle with biopolar II disorder - but he says that early reviews of the movie have given him a huge lift.

He told People: ''I needed some good news. I've gone through a couple of years of cancer, and I've got major issues with my older son.''

The 68-year-old actor - whose eldest son Cameron is in the midst of a nine-year jail sentence after being busted for drugs in 2009 - regularly writes to him to show his support.

He said: ''He's a great person.''

Douglas insists his family's struggles have helped him realise what is most important in life.

He said: '' I'm feeling good. I'm still here.''

'Behind the Candelabra' - which recently premiered to stellar reviews at Cannes Film Festival - tells the story of the famous musician, played by Douglas, and his secret gay relationship with driver Scott Thorson (Matt Damon).

The movie is based on Thorson's tell-all book about his life with Liberace.
