In an apparent effort to placate Chinese officials, MGM is altering its upcoming thriller Red Dawn, erasing Chinese flags and other objects and substituting dialogue so that the invaders in the movie are transformed into North Koreans, the Los Angeles Times reported today. The alterations were undertaken without any official request by Chinese officials, the newspaper noted, coming after distributors expressed concern that the original version would harm their ability to do business in China. The Times observed that such a reediting -- changing the nationality of an entire group of characters -- is unprecedented. Tripp Vinson, one of the film's producers, defended the revisions, telling the Times that while he was originally "very reluctant" to alter the film, "after careful consideration we constructed a way to make a scarier, smarter and more dangerous Red Dawn that we believe improves the movie."
