Metallica And Rage Win Heavy Metal Awards
Rage were added to the magazine's Hall of Fame, while Metallica picked up the inspirational award.
30 Seconds To Mars went away with two awards last night, best single and best international band.
Welsh band Bullet For My Valentine were named best British band at the annual awards.
Picking up their inspirational award, Metallica's lead singer James Hetfield said: "We are very, very appreciative of all the love we feel around us.
"Heavy metal is resurging, coming alive again. Thank you for supporting that."
The US band were continually praised through the night by other acts, with the magazine's editor Paul Brannigan claiming they had "changed the face of heavy metal forever".
"Every musician in this room is influenced by this band and their classic albums," he added.
