Meryl Streep Donates To Charity On Behalf Of Oscar-rival Viola Davis
Reuters reports that Streep wrote a cheque of $10,000 to Upward Bound to honor Davis. According to a spokesperson for the charity, it was the largest donation that anyone's given to the organization. Upward Bound is a federally funded program in the US that provides college preparatory classes and educational grants to high school students from low-income areas, Davis and her sister Dolores both attended the program in the past.
Streep won the Best Actress Award for her role as former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; she had stiff competition in Davis however, who had earned rave reviews and plaudits for her performance in 'The Help.'
