Meryl Streep, 62, Becomes Vogue Cover Star

Meryl Streep, 62, graces the cover of fashion bible Vogue for the first time and with it sets the record for the oldest person ever to do so. The veteran actress is tipped to win an Oscar in 2012, but claims the peak of her career was about 20 years ago in the accompanying interview, reports the New York Daily News.

Streep is described as "America's Greatest Actress' on the cover of the January issue of the magazine, on which she appears sitting by the sea in a flowing blue summer dress. The actress, who turned 62 this year, takes the record of the oldest cover star by some three years - Priscilla Presley appeared alongside her daughter and granddaughter in 2004, aged 59 at the time. In the Vogue feature piece, Vicki Woods writes, "Her skin is fabulous and luminously pale, and her pretty hands are manicured so naturally that I can't tell if her nails are polished or just beautifully buffed. She is slight and delicate, maybe more than I expected". The actress is the overwhelming favorite to win Best Actress at next year's Academy Awards for her role as Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady', but Streep hinted that her best roles are now behind her. Referring to her 40th birthday in 1989, the Oscar-winner said, "I remember turning to my husband and saying, Well, what should we do? Because it's over". The following year she reportedly received three offers to play witches in three different movies, explaining, "Once women passed childbearing age they could only be seen as grotesque on some level".

Streep will next star alongside Steve Carell and Tommy Lee Jones in 'Great Hope Springs' - a comedy drama about a middle aged couple who attend an intense counselling weekend to decide the fate of their marriage.
