Mercury Music Prize Shortlist Revealed

by | 22 July 2008

The 12 acts competing for this year's Mercury music prize have been unveiled.

Adele, Radiohead and the Last Shadow Puppets top the shortlist, which also includes Estelle and Elbow.

But there was no place in the judges' thoughts for Coldplay, the Enemy or Kate Nash.

Simon Frith, the chair of judges, said 2007/08 had been a "remarkably rich year for British music"

"What is most striking is the continued resilience and flexibility of the album as a way of organising music-making. It remains an unrivalled source of musical invention and imagination, a way of linking songs, exploring themes and developing sounds that is endlessly thrilling, surprising and worth celebration."

The winners of this year's award will be announced on Friday September 12th.
