Mellencamp: 'The Internet Is Dangerous'

John Mellencamp is convinced the internet has "destroyed" the music business, branding the web the "most dangerous thing invented since the atomic bomb".

The veteran rocker is adamant the rise in online music sales and the decline of CDs, combined with a sharp increase in internet piracy, will be detrimental to the industry in the long term, and he's even convinced digital tracks don't sound the same as hard copies.

He tells Reuters, "I think the internet is the most dangerous thing invented since the atomic bomb. It's destroyed the music business. It's going to destroy the movie business.

"(I listened to a Beatles track on a CD and then on an iPod, and) you could barely even recognise it as the same song. You could tell it was those guys singing, but the warmth and quality of what the artist intended for us to hear was so vastly different."

Mellencamp also fears the internet will spell the end of rock 'n' roll, insisting only a few popular artists will be remembered in years to come.

He adds, "After a few generations, it's gone. Rock 'n' roll - as important as we think it is, and as big as it was, and as much money as people made on it, and as proud as I am to say that I was part of it - at the end of the day, they're gonna say: 'Yeah, there was this band called the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, and this guy named Bob Dylan...'

"And the rest of us? We're just gonna be footnotes. And I think that that's OK. I'm happy to have spent my life doing what I wanted to do, playing music, make something out of life, but forgetting about the idea of legacy."

Well dire predictions aside, he's correct in saying that movies and music have the danger of becoming too impersonal with all the new delivery methods. It remains to be seen what streaming movies to everything will do to movies in general. The problem is studios are going to change at least some of their approach to formatting and delivery. Given that the attention span of kids and adults today is that of a fly I can see them creating small cameo "movies" in the future to fit a certain time length and personal device. That doesn't mean other forms die it just spreads the total dollars across many more venues. As it is today quality has sunk dramatically, it's hard to even find a movie that isn't filled with cheesy one liners, non-stop ad nauseam faux action and nothing but sexual innuendo. The internet did not do that, nor did the internet cause all rock and roll to just die. If the kids want Lady Gaga there's not much you can do about it except puke non-stop.Unfortunately the kids today don't seem to be that interested in rock n' roll more it seems just playing with their phones. Maybe it's just the emasculation of America, where guys aren't really guys anymore.

I totally agree with you, John. In fact I said the same thing many years ago.About 20 , I think. I essentially called computers the Devil and said they would be the reason for the end of mankind and everything else on earth. Although, if by some weird twist of fate Sarah Palin becomes President, I predict we all die from nuclear bomb. (Probably in 2012) Of course that would be internet related as well, given that's one of the reasons she's so popular. Did you listen to the Gearge Carlin clip where he says "be happy with what ya got?" You can find it on my facebook page Linda Juergens. I got nothin to hide. I got no money. I'm about to lose my home and I just don't give a s**t any more. there's probably 10 more Linda Juergens's out that that stole my ID, although I don't know why they"d want it. "Freedom is just another word for nothin left to lose" Janis Joplin AND IT"S TRUE!!! You'll know it's my page when you see I am involved in horse rescue. I'm doing a benefit. that's right, a benefit for Indiana horse rescue south at the Lake county fairgrounds in Crown Point, called Dog days of summer. All PROFITS WILL GO TO HORSE RESCUE. My little company founded out of desperation (I used to be a Realtor) Is jazzybeachjewelry.com Take care John. Always loved your music and still do. In fact I think I'll listen to Scarecrow right now.

Mellencamp needs to grow up, He has made millions and now wants to cry that some people are getting music off net? How much does he need? and further more he states in a few generations people won't remeber the Beatles? hmmm I wonder if He has seen how big Elvis is? o sorry John Cougar I mean Elvis Presley he was known as the king of rock and roll. Elvis is still one of the biggest acts around and he's been dead since what 78? but you are right in a few generations who will remember John Cougar Mellencamp I mean his songs touched millions and and was at the forefront of so much. True you did have some good songs but noway could you ever match up to the Beatles,Elvis, and many others. But you are like most 80's pop stars have to get your name in the papers so maybe someone will remember you like that Scarecrow in the rain.
