John Mellencamp - Mellencamp Doubts He'll Ever Give Up Smoking

Rocker JOHN MELLENCAMP has resigned himself to live the rest of his life as a smoker because he's been addicted to nicotine for so long, his health is "toast".
The veteran Jack & Diane hitmaker had promised to cut down on his habit in 2010 following his teenage son Speck's failed attempt to make his famous dad quit cigarettes in 2009.
Mellencamp reveals his children have since eased up the pressure to kick his addiction for good and he's sure any efforts to give up nicotine are a waste of time - because he's smoked so many cigarettes during his 59 years, the damage to his lungs is already done.
He says, "I think they're annoyed that their dad's smoking. They're worrying about having to smell the second hand smoke (rather) than their dad smoking.
"About a year ago, a guy counted up how many cigarettes I'd smoked - over 650,000 cigarettes. So I'm toast. It's a little late to give up!"
The ageing star used to smoke four packs of cigarettes a day prior to his heart attack in 1994.

John, you CAN quit one day at a time. My husband is 55 and quit 10 years ago he smoked 3+packs since he was 11 years old. He had a brother who was only 2 years older than him that had a massive heart attack and died immediately. His brother worked out in the log woods was in good shape but smoked as much or more than my husband. The guy working with him said all he did was clutch his chest and say "man I don't know what a heart attack feels like but I think I am having one." Next minute he was dead. They said his heart exploded, he worked in the log woods all his life and was in good shape other than the smoking. Made my husband look at his smoking that he had tried to quit before, he had quit drinking some years before but said smoking was the hardest. I quit smoking 2 yrs before he did-THAT was hard. He quit with the help of Wellbutrin (same as Zyban) and nicotine gum, peppermint which makes smoking taste NASTY and what helped me was someone reminded me that smokers are used to relaxing by taking long deep breaths lots of time of day, something they immediately quit when they give up cigarettes-I thought she was crazy but it really helped. Plus when I went to my husbands brother's funeral and saw him I had to leave the room. He and my husband could have passed for twins-really freaked me out. Get a little book called 365 reasons to quit Smoking, look at one little page each day, it will tell you how much your body is improving day by day and how much your health is going up even us Baby Boomers. My husband smoked more than I did and now is annoyed at the "STINK" of it more than I am. That is when you know you have it licked. He can smell it in a car two cars in from of him at a stop light and has to leave a restaurant that allows smoking. Thought he would NEVER be one of THOSE ex-smokers. It is like your body says-yuck no more! and sets up an allergy to it. But hey we can both hold our 4 year old granddaughter and she never has to tell us how much we stink. We both are sober 17 and 19 years and yes it can be done the same with smoking no matter how old you are! ONE DAY AT A TIME. My father who had Alzheimer's lived with us the for 6 years and died last year. One time we had an ice storm SO bad that I told him he was out of smokes and I could not get out and get him anymore which was true-no stores had power and other buildings for days. Finally the roads opened and he asked about me getting more cigarettes for him. I was scared to death he would set his apartment on fire. So I told him "Dad you have quit now for a month are you sure you want to start again" He said "Dam if I went that long I might as well stay off the dam things." Yes, it was a trick but it worked! He was 82 at the time and the next 5 years I noticed how much of an improvement he had with his stamina and breathing and even the doctor noticed. He was blessed to die in his sleep in 2009 at age 87. So you know how many years he smoked-MANY more than you! DO NOT GIVE UP-I don't REALLY like many singers but you are one of a handful I have always liked and helped me through many times in my life and I want to keep hearing your great voice. Don't stop trying for your family and your fans. My husband had to try more than a few times until his doctor gave him the wellbutrin-same as (Zyban) for 6 months-he said it was a long term problem that needed a long treatment. And you can keep smoking at first with it then it starts tasting nasty. And with the gum your mind KNOWS you can spit it out and smoke one-the patch tells you to NOT smoke one for a long time while wearing it or afterwards for a while or you risk a heart attack and they don't do much for the need to do something-would taste nasty to chew! They are coming up with more and more things every day. Don't give up and ask God to help you ONE DAY AT A TIME. I used to carry a half pack in my purse for months-told myself just for today I won't smoke-I will smoke one tomorrow if I have to and then tell myself that the next day. Sometimes I had to say that for an hour at a time. Finally threw the stale cigarettes out! But God helps those willing to meet him half way. Keep On TRYING!
