Megamind The Bad Guy Wins
As expected DreamWorks Animation's Megamind controlled the box office over the weekend as it earned an estimated $47 million. That was a tad below the consensus of analysts, who had expected it to earn $50-55 million, but no one was complaining. It was a particularly strong figure for the first weekend of November, which is now being talked about as the first weekend of the holiday season. By contrast, last year during the comparable weekend, A Christmas Carol led with $30.5 million. The Robert Downey Jr./Zach Galifianakis comedy, Due Date , opened solidly at No. 2 with $33.5 million. Tyler Perry's drama For Colored Girls debuted in third place with $20.1 million. Last week's top film, Saw 3D , was cut down to size in its second week, earning just $8.2 million, down by nearly two thirds from its debut. While no film achieved blockbuster ticket sales, each of the three new releases in wide release had solid debuts and together set a record for a November opening weekend, estimated to be about $155 million, beating the previous record of $153 million set in 2003.
