Meat Loaf - Meat Loaf Ate Horse Escalopes
Rock veteran Meat Loaf ate horsemeat by mistake while on tour in Germany.
The Bat Out of Hell star was in Europe for a series of gigs in the mid 1980s and did not realise beef stocks on the continent were low following fears of nuclear fallout from the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
During a visit to a restaurant in Germany, the star ordered a Wiener Schnitzel - an escalope traditionally made with beef - but was informed it contained horsemeat after he complained about the strange taste.
He tells Q magazine, "Remember Chernobyl? They were serving horsemeat everywhere in Europe back then, because they were afraid of radiation in the cows. I don't know why they thought the horses would be any different... I was in Germany at the time of Chernobyl and I ordered a Wiener Schnitzel and remember thinking, 'There's something very wrong with this.' It turned out they were serving horse."
Panic gripped Europe following an explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine which sent large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere.
