Matthew Williamson - Matthew Williamson's Design Frustration

Matthew Williamson admits it can be ''frustrating'' to have a signature style.

The designer is known for his glamorous-boho creations and while sometimes he would like to try something new, he finds it comforting to have a ''structure'' to his work.

He said: ''People box you in and I think there are very few artists - whether you're a musician or a painter or whatever - who can tear up the rule book and start again, and get away with it.

''I think that most designers build a foundation and a DNA, and I think that can become frustrating as a designer - because of course I have those moments when I think, 'I want to do this, but it doesn't look like me' - but I quite like to have that kind of structure.

''Lucinda Chambers said to me, a long time ago after a show, 'You really own that girl now' - and I didn't really get it at the time. Later though, I thought, actually - however much you might sometimes want to run away from it - we have created this lifestyle, and that's a good thing.''

Matthew also admitted his pre-collections - which arrive in store months before the catwalk garments - are now the most lucrative aspect of his business.

He told Vogue.co.uk: ''The pre collections are crucial, really. It's a part of the business that we really couldn't do without. We've been doing it about six years now, and in the beginning it was definitely an add-on - but that has completely turned around now. It's about 65 or 70 per cent of our sales, so you almost start to question why we don't show this! The delivery time is perfect, and the pieces have a slightly more commercial slant than what you would put on the runway; more easy-to-wear pieces.''
