Mary J Blige Burger King Ads Pulled Following Outcry
Adverts featuring Mary J Blige singing about her love of chicken have been pulled by fast food giant Burger King after they came under fierce criticism for what was perceived to be depiction of racial stereotype. Though Burger King have stated that the decision to pull them from the air came down to a licensing issue, it's widely assumed that is was a mere smoke screen for the rage that has in fact been directed at them; losing the fast food war to MCDonalds badly in the States, more bad publicity is the last thing they need.
A statement from the chain said that the ads were pulled due to a licensing concern, according to The Huffington Post, and added that it hoped for them to return to the air soon. There was no mention as to whether they'd be different adverts. The chain also pointed out that other celebrities including Salma Hayek and Jay Leno had also been advertising their chicken wraps.
However that didn't really seem to matter to the baying hordes, with the black women-orientated website Madame Noire even going as far as writing an open letter to Mary J Blige admonishing her for being a tool of what they believed was a crass attempt by Burger King to reach the urban market. There has been no word yet from Blige herself.
