Manson Rediscovered Love For Music After Tragic Loss

Former Garbage rocker Shirley Manson has decided to make a return to music - after she was asked to sing at the funeral of a friend's son.

Last March (09) the star revealed she was hanging up her microphone to concentrate on chasing TV and movie roles, after landing a part in U.S. series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

She explained that after touring with bands since her teens, she no longer felt nervous before performing in front of huge crowds, adding: "There gets to a point where you are stepping out in front of 100,000 people and your blood pressure doesn't change."

Manson also admitted she lost her musical creativity after her mother's death from dementia in 2008.

But it took the tragic death of her pal's six-year-old son last year (09) - and being asked to sing at his memorial - that made the star realise how important music is to people.

She tells Britain's Elle magazine, "Friends of mine lost their six-year-old son to cancer last year, and they asked me to sing his favourite song, Life on Mars, at the memorial. We were all in so much pain, but it meant so much to them that I could sing that song and so much to me that I was able to do something. It made me realise how much music sustains people. I don't know why I'd turned my back on it."
