Maggie Smith - Maggie Smith 'baffled' about lack of elderly films

Dame Maggie Smith is ''baffled'' as to why there aren't more films aimed at elderly people.

The 77-year-old actress thinks there should be more movies created to please an older audience because she believes there are too many motion pictures around which treat people ''as if they are five years old''.

Speaking at a London Film Festival press conference for her latest movie 'Quartet', she told BANG Showbiz: ''I don't know why films about elderly people haven't been made very much. They always seem to be very successful so it's a bit baffling as to why everybody has to be treated as if they were five years old.''

Maggie's latest movie 'Quartet' - which stars Billy Connolly and Sheridan Smith, with Dustin Hoffman making his directorial debut - tells the story of a group of retired opera singers who are gearing up for their annual concert when her alter-ego, the ex-wife of Tom Courtenay's character, makes an unwanted return to the home they all reside in.

The 'Downton Abbey' actress hopes there will be an influx of movies aimed at older people in a similar way to 'Quartet' and 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' - in which she portrayed a retired housekeeper - because there would be plenty of interest.

She added: ''A lot of grown ups would like films for grown ups and about grown ups, and it seems to me there's a sort of change in what audiences want to see.

''I can only hope that's correct because there's an awful lot of people of my age around now and we kind of outnumber the others so maybe that's why?''

'Quartet' is released in the UK on January 4, 2013.
