Mad Men's Jon Hamm Bewildered By Love For Don Draper

He may have four seasons of Mad Men under his belt (and is signed up for another three) but Jon Hamm doesn't know why people like his character Don Draper. According to New York Daily News today (March 22, 2012) the 41 year-old actor says he still doesn't have an answer ready for when people ask what it is about Don Draper that has made him so enduringly well-liked by the show's viewers. "I still don't have a good stock answer to why people like him," he told reporters.

As season five is scheduled to premiere, with a tight press embargo preventing reporters from revealing any details about the plotlines or the fate of any of the characters, Jon Hamm wonders if they see "a hope for redemption" in his character: "Five years in, they're still rooting for him." Talking about the impact of the show, Hamm comments on the fact that, despite having become a cult phenomenon, Mad Men does not have particularly high ratings. "We've proven a show that doesn't pull big numbers can still have this kind of cultural impact."

Asked whether or not he thinks his character will be able to keep up with the rapidly changing world of advertising, Hamm says "I think he can try. But you can't stay cool forever. Eventually we all become the old guy sitting in a chair on the lawn shaking his fist at the heavens."
