Maccabees Fame Surprise

The Maccabees are surprised they're being called the next big thing.

The Brighton-based indie rock band - who have been named as headline acts for the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour 2010 - are likely to follow in the success of their predecessors which include Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, and the Arctic Monkey's, but the group remain modest about how far they'll go.

The five piece said they first realised how popular they'd become when they performed at last years Glastonbury Festival in a mid-afternoon set which is often forgotten, but for them, something different happened.

Speaking of his shock, singer Orlando Weeks said: "No-one was leaving. And then we f***ed up 'Precious Time' and I could hear a sympathetic 'ahhh' coming from the crowd. In that moment I sensed something that hadn't previously been there with festival audiences."

Guitarist Hugo White added: "When we started this, the idea was that there had to be more to the evenings and weekends than sitting on the sofa watching telly."

Their new single, which is a re-worked, re-titled version of their song 'No Kind Words' now features rapper Roots Manuva, which Orlando claims was simply "an appeal to a friend to sort themselves out a bit".

Despite their success, The Maccabees are still reluctant to sit on their newly acquired laurels.

Speaking of Roots Manuva's input, Orlando added to Times2: "He put his vocals over the track and we re-arranged it and chopped it up a bit. The moment he approved what we had done, it felt like such a success."
