Steve Carrel is set to star in 'Lunatics'.
The '40-year-old Virgin' actor will take on the role of Philip Horkman, a pet shop owner who referees kids football games on Sundays, the character in the novel written by Dave Barry and Alan Zweibel which has now been acquired by Universal Pictures.
The Barry Zweibel-creation, which will be produced by Scott Stuber and Pam Abdy as well as Steve himself along with his Carousel partners Vance DeGeneres and Charlie Hartsock, is about the feud of two New Jersey football dads which escalates far beyond its means leaving unexpected consequences and misadventures.
The misadventures occur when Carell has a run in with an irate football father and the bitter-feud begins from there.
The film will be an adaptation of the two authors' book, which will be published at the beginning of 2010 by Putman although there has been no word as to when the filming of the novel will begin.
Steve, who starred in the hit-comedy 'Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy', is to start filming in January for his next film 'Burt Wonderstone', a comedy with Jim Carey set for release in 2013.
