The economist who inspired 1992 movie Lorenzo's Oil has died, aged 80.

Augusto Odone rejected medical opinion and created an oil to save his son Lorenzo after he was diagnosed with neurological disease adrenoleukodystrophy and given two years to live.

Odone studied medicine and biochemistry, and concocted a mixture of acids from olive and rapeseed oils that helped prolong his son's life - Lorenzo died at the age of 30.

Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon played Odone and his wife in the film.
