Logie Organisers Step Up Security Over One Direction Fears

The organisers of Australia's upcoming Logie Awards have stepped up security ahead of One Direction's appearance and urged the British boy band's fans to stay away from Sunday night's (15Apr12) event.

The pop stars are due to perform at the glitzy TV prizegiving at the Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex in Melbourne and Logies bosses are concerned they will see a repeat of recent scenes in Sydney, where hundreds of fans have camped out in a bid to see the boys and caused chaos on the city's streets.

Organisers have now revealed they are drafting in more security guards and stepping up the police presence at the venue in a bid to keep the ceremony safe, and they have urged One Direction fans not to turn up at the event unless they have a ticket.

More than 350 competition winners have been invited to watch the band perform, but they will be the only fans allowed anywhere near the venue.

A Logies spokeswoman says, "(We are) expecting the very worst. We are getting more security and more police. Our main priority surrounding the performance is the safety of those fans attending and the community surrounding the Crown precinct, as well as the boys themselves.

"We are totally across it. We have seen what this band has caused across the world - they shut down streets in Paris when they appeared in-store recently."

Victoria Buchan, spokeswoman for Australia's Channel Nine network, adds, "Our main priority is to deliver a successful major event and to ensure the safety of the fans, the invited guests and Crown's customers as well as the boys themselves."
