"Not only is it the European capital of culture next year but the influence of its rich music heritage is still felt today."
This year's event is will be hosted by US rap star Snoop Dogg at OlympiaHalle in Munich and will feature Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance, Mika, Avril Lavigne and Babyshambles among others.
Commenting on the decision to take The Music roadshow, which is broadcast in more than 100 countries, to England's north-west, culture secretary James Purnell said it would make 2008 a memorable year for Liverpudlians.
"With its stunning back catalogue of musicians and current crop of chart toppers, Liverpool is a creative force in the world music industry," the Cabinet minister said.
"It's fantastic that MTV has chosen Liverpool to host the 2008 Europe Music Awards - this will make the European capital of culture year even more special."
