Live Earth Gig Scrapped

by | 27 June 2007

Next month's Live Earth music event suffered a setback yesterday when it was announced that Turkey would no longer stage one of several concerts which are taking place across the world to raise awareness of global warming.

Organisers of the Istanbul concert said security concerns and a lack of interest had forced them to scrap the gig, which had been due to take place along with others on July 7th.

The Turkish performance, which was only announced last month, was also abandoned due to the country's pre-occupation with a forthcoming general election, they revealed.

"Despite all our efforts, there is no possibility to hold a live performance due to a lack of time," Purple Concerts, the company responsible for organising the concert, said in a statement.

Instead a large screen will be erected in Istanbul so that Turkish music fans can view the concerts taking place in other cities, the company told the Associated Press news agency.

Meanwhile arrangements for the remaining eight Live Earth concerts are well underway.

Yesterday organisers revealed that Lenny Kravitz, Pharrell Williams and Macy Gray will be among musicians playing at the Brazilian gig on Rio de Janeiro's famous Copacabana beach.

Earlier this month it was confirmed that rock band Metallica, Kasabian and the Pussycat Dolls would be joining the London line up, with the Beastie Boys, Damien Rice, David Gray and Duran Duran among those acts previously revealed to be taking part in the British gig at Wembley Stadium.

Live Earth concerts will also be held in Tokyo, Hamburg, Shanghai, New York, Johannesburg and Sydney as part of the 24-hour global music event spearheaded by environmental campaigner and former US presidential candidate Al Gore to help tackle climate change.
