Lil Wayne Ready To Accept Plea Deal In Gun Case?

Rap superstar LIL WAYNE will plead guilty to a 2007 gun possession charge after striking a deal to avoid a lengthy prison sentence, according to an online report.

The Lollipop hitmaker is due to stand trial in January (10) on second degree felony charges of criminal weapons possession and criminal possession of a loaded weapon, following his arrest in New York two years ago when cops found a firearm on his tourbus.

Wayne, who entered a not guilty plea earlier this year (09), is facing up to 15 years in prison for each count if he's convicted of the crimes.

The star, real name Dwayne Carter, Jr., maintains the gun is registered to his manager Cortez Bryant, but prosecutors claim to have DNA results which link the rapper to the weapon.

He returned to a Manhattan courtroom on Wednesday (21Oct09) when representatives from the New York District Attorney's office argued their case to include the use of the DNA evidence in the upcoming trial.

A judge has yet to make a ruling, but according to AllHipHop.com, the case won't even make it to trial - because the hip-hop star is set to accept a plea deal when he appears in court on Thursday (22Oct09).

A source tells the website, "Wayne is going to plead guilty... They (prosecutors) told him that if he doesn't plead (guilty), it will go to trial and then he faces a far longer jail term."

Under the terms of the reported deal, Wayne will serve eight months behind bars and will turn himself into authorities in February (10) to begin the prison stint.

A representative for the rapper was unavailable for a comment as WENN went to press.

However, it's not the end of Wayne's legal problems - he's due to stand trial in March (10) on drug possession charges after another arrest in Yuma, Arizona in January 2008.
