Lil Wayne Leads The Way With Eight Grammy Nominations

Lil Wayne and Coldplay are frontrunners for glory at the 2009 Grammys, with eight and seven nominations respectively.

The diminutive rapper is named in eight categories including album of the year and best rap song while Coldplay could take the record of year prize.

Among the seven nominations for Chris Martin and company are nods in both the pop and rock categories while hip-hop stars Kanye West and Jay-Z, along with R 'n' B artist Ne-Yo each have six nominations.

The winners will be announced at a Los Angeles ceremony on February 8th, after the nominations were unveiled live on primetime television for the first time ever.

Artists including Celine Dion, John Mayer, Bb King, Taylor Swift and Foo Fighters performed at the Nokia Theatre telecast as the nominees for the 2009 awards were revealed.

"The Grammy Awards process once again has yielded a comprehensive, diverse and eclectic group of excellent nominees across multiple genres," said Neil Portnow, president and chief executive of the Recording Academy.

"This year's nominations are truly reflective of the talented community of artists and creators who represent some of the highest levels of musical excellence."
