Libel Damages For Ozzy Osbourne After Health Slur

by | 05 June 2008

Ozzy Osbourne has been awarded libel damages after the Daily Star newspaper claimed he had suffered health problems prior to this year's Brit awards.

The Black Sabbath frontman was awarded an undisclosed sum after the tabloid said he had collapsed twice prior to this year's ceremony, which he hosted with wife Sharon and children Kelly and Jack.

The 59-year-old was not present for the settlement of his action against Express Newspapers at today's high court hearing in London.

An article entitled Ozzy's Freak Show had claimed the singer had fallen twice before the February ceremony, causing Brit organisers to consider his hospitalisation.

It alleged he had required an electric buggy to be transported around London's Earl's Court venue and said he and wife Sharon were given thrones, as Osbourne had demanded a place to sit in case he grew tired.

His solicitor John Kelly was quoted by Sky News as saying: "The publication of the article has caused damage to the claimant's personal and professional reputation and he has suffered considerable embarrassment and distress as a result of it."

Katie Wilson, Express Newspapers' counsel, offered the publication's sincere apologies for publishing untrue allegations.

It is believed Osbourne will donate the damages to his wife's colon cancer charity.
